DESO in Canterbury work tirelessly to receive donations for their cause. DESO is very much a UK charity seeking to change the lives of physically challenged children and adults in Ghana, helping them become resourceful, active and employable. The emphasis is on recycling equipment from the UK and using it to change the lives of those in Africa where resources do not reach the people who need it.

Although presently only active in Ghana, through years of association with the country, DESO would like to roll out their mission across Africa. They firmly believe that it is a worthy cause and one that is dedicated on giving directly to the people that need help; eliminating the beaurocracy that can inhibit this.

Mavis and Eddie are tenacious in their mission and have many individuals and organisations that they would like to thank for their generosity. Canterbury an its surrounding area has so far provided the majority of donations from crutches and leg braces to books and computers.

One of the key drivers for DESO is to provide the basis for the disabled people of Ghana to gain a sense of independence and purpose as well as a sustainable dwelling. They can help build and develop the school, grow fruit and vegetables, participate in activities such as football, and also earn their own money through odd jobs such as sewing. The donations of farming tools, old sewing machines and crutches have allowed freedom and opportunity and a definite sense of community.

At this moment in time DESO are desperate to bring a water supply to the land that they are developing. The nearest water is 5 miles away and so to irrigate the land it is purely the use of water barrels which try and keep the land fertile. The water barrels have been donated by Earth Blends.

Fruit and vegetables grown in the last year are; bananas, plantain, casaba, garden eggs, corn, yams, okra, watermelons, paw paws and tomatoes. There are also Maringa trees used for herbal medicine and they are trying to grow salads. Many of the seeds have been donated by Seeds for Africa. The last year has also seen the planting of 500 trees...
